Lead poisoning can cause severe health effects including damage to the liver, kidneys, brain, nerves, bones and blood.

Children are especially at high risk!  Toxic levels of lead can cause permanent learning disabilities, retardation and even brain damage in young children. In adults, lead poisoning can cause high blood pressure and reproductive problems. In pregnant women, the fetus is particularly vulnerable to lead's toxic effects. The symptoms of lead toxicity are vague and may include: fatigue, pallor, malaise, loss of apetite, irritabillity, sleep disturbances, sudden behavioral change, developmental regression, clumsiness, muscular irregularities, weakness, abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, constipation, changes in consiousness and high blood pressure.

How it Works:  Each Lead Test Swab contains a lead reactive dye and a buffer solution containing ingredients designed to maximize the sensitivity and specificity of the reaction.  None of the materials used in this test are hazardous. The chemistry is based on known principles.  The reactive dye is highly specific for lead forming a pink or red color. In the presence of certain chemicals additional test precautions are required.

  • Sulfates: Most commonly found in plaster, Sulfates can block the color development on the test surface or test swabs. Cleaning the surface to remove plaster dust is usually all that is required.
  • Tin: Most commonly encountered when testing solder, high levels of tin can turn the Swab Tip purple. When lead is present the swabs tip will turn pink before turning purple.
  • Red Paint: Red paint pigments can come off of test surfaces - coating the swab.
  • Delayed color reaction: Occurs when very low levels of lead are present or when lead does not easily leach from the surface. If pink is seen anywhere on the swab tip or where the tip contacted the surface the test is positive for lead.
