The versatile Home Mold Laboratory Viable Mold Test Kit allows you to use any one of 3 different testing methods, depending on your particular needs; one method for taking direct topical samples of the suspect substance and two air mold spore sampling methods. The kit comes complete with easy to follow instructions for testing your home or office environment.
How to test a substance you suspect is mold
Using the sampling swab included in the kit, sample the substance you suspect is mold, then swab the culture medium in the kit. If there is nothing visible growing in the culture medium in three to seven days, the substance you sampled is not living, growing mold. If you see mold growing in the medium after approximately three to seven days, the substance is living, growing mold. At that time, you have the option of sending the kit back to Home Mold Laboratory for further analysis.
For your convenience, we’ve also put up a short video describing the how to test for surface mold with the viable kit – just click on the video to play.
How to perform an air quality test
For each room of your home you wish to test, place one Viable Mold Test Kit in the room and another outdoors near the room with the lids open. After one hour, close the lids on the kits. If mold is present in your environment, you will see mold growing in the kits after about three to seven days. Compare the indoor kits with the outdoor kit, looking for differences in types of mold or quantity of mold. If you have different types of mold growing in the indoor kits than in the outdoor kit or if you have more mold growing in the indoor kits than in the outdoor kit, Home Mold Laboratory recommends that you send the kits back to our laboratory for analysis.

How to test your heating and cooling system
Carefully affix the Viable Mold Test Kit to the air vent that is furthest from the heating and cooling system. After making sure that all other vents are closed, turn the system on high for ten minutes. Remove and close the Viable Mold Test Kit. If mold is present in heating and cooling system, you will see mold growing in the kit after about three to seven days. If more than a few spots of mold are growing in the kit, Home Mold Laboratory recommends that you send the kit back to our laboratory for analysis.
When you return your sample, we will analyze it in our state-of-the-art laboratory to identify the types and quantity of mold present. Your test results will also tell you whether the mold is allergenic, pathogenic or toxigenic. When you receive your results, call us for a phone consultation to determine a course of action.
